Rough terrain forklifts have two defining characteristics: they’re powered by internal combustion (IC) engines, and they have pneumatic tyres that let them handle uneven surfaces. This combination makes rough terrain forklifts the ideal choice for Timberyards, construction projects, landscaping, and other outdoor applications.

Rough terrain forklifts use IC engines for several reasons. They’re often built to handle larger loads, which IC forklifts are better at than electric. IC forklifts usually have better acceleration and top speeds than electric, which can be a big plus on large job sites.

Furthermore, internal combustion engines are more familiar to most mechanics than electric, so routine maintenance and basic repairs can be handled by your own mechanics, instead of requiring a service call or trip to the shop. For machines that take a lot of abuse, this can be a big time saver.

Pneumatic tyres are the other key component of a rough terrain forklift. Pneumatic tyres — rubber tyres filled with air, similar to car tyres — provide the traction and cushioning necessary for use on rutted ground and uneven terrain.

For the worst ground conditions, such as a recycling center where broken glass is commonplace, consider “solid pneumatic” tyres. The name is a bit misleading, because there is no air at all in these tyres: they’re solid rubber to prevent popping.

Narrow aisle forklifts are essential to modern warehousing operations. By allowing aisle widths as narrow as 6 feet, they greatly increase the number of aisles that can fit in a given warehouse, and that, in turn, increases warehouse capacity.

Standard lift trucks need aisles that are 11′ wide or larger to be able to operate and turn around. Narrow aisle forklifts (NA) are capable of operating in aisles 8′ to 10′ wide; and very narrow aisle forklifts (VNAs) can work in aisles as little as 6′ wide. Note that “narrow aisle forklift” and “very narrow aisle forklift” are industry-standard terms, not just descriptions.

Since they often operate with little margin for error, very narrow aisle forklifts are available with guidance systems. Optical or wire guidance systems that run the length of the aisle keep the forklift on a consistently straight path, allowing the operator to focus on picking and placing loads.

Narrow aisle forklifts are almost all electric powered, since they’re used indoors, although some propane-powered models are available. They also feature cushion tyres – smooth, solid rubber tires that are best for paved surfaces and concrete floors.

Other add-ons that are valuable for narrow aisle forklifts:

• Sideshift. This very popular option allows the operator to move the load left and right without moving the truck, allowing much more precise placement of loads.
• Tilt mast. The ability to tilt the mast and forks forward and back is useful if loads aren’t exactly level. Tilting the mast back slightly also provides greater stability while moving a loaded truck.
• Extendable forks. Adding extendable forks increases the “reach” of the Narrow Aisle forklift, allowing what’s known as “double-deep” loading: stacking pallets one in front of the other.
• Operator Platforms. Some Narrow Aisle forklift trucks raise and lower the operator along with the forks. When handling loads 20′ or 30′ up, this allows much greater visibility and control than having the operator at ground level.

Electric forklifts are really the best choice for warehouses, manufacturing applications, and other indoor use, for two primary reasons. One is that they produce zero emissions — if you are going to be using your forklift indoors, this is a very important consideration. Of the internal combustion (IC) models, only propane (LPG)-fuelled lifts can be used indoors, and they still require very good ventilation.  Diesel-powered models are not normally used inside due to the fumes. The other primary advantage is fuel cost. Electric forklifts have a lower cost per hour of operation than any of the internal combustion (IC) models. This helps to offset one of their disadvantages – their higher initial cost. New electric forklifts can cost 20% to 40% more than similarly-rated IC forklifts.

Additional advantages of an electric forklift include quieter operation – another big indoor advantage – and no fuel storage requirements. Because they have fewer moving parts and are often used in cleaner environments than IC trucks, they also tend to have a longer lifespan.

The biggest downside of an electric forklift is the battery downtime. Electric forklifts are powered by large, heavy, lead-acid batteries – the same kind found in your car, but considerably larger and more powerful. The batteries typically provide enough power for one standard eight-hour shift, which translates into 5 or 6 hours of constant usage.

Internal Combustion (IC) Forklifts

Internal combustion (IC) forklifts burn fuel in engines similar to car engines. They’re the most common choice for outdoor use. In addition, only IC forklifts are capable of handling the largest loads – if you require greater than 7 Ton capacity, you definitely need an internal combustion engine.

IC forklifts can run on petrol, diesel fuel, liquid propane (LPG), or compressed natural gas (CNG). Operating costs are generally highest for petrol and lowest for diesel, with propane and CNG somewhere in the middle. The choice is often made based on existing vehicles and equipment: if you already have diesel vehicles and fuel storage, it’s best to go with diesel forklifts as well.

One of the main advantages IC forklifts provide is the ability to be refueled on the fly: simply fill it up at a fuel pump or load a new propane canister on and your forklift is ready to continue working in no time. They are cheaper to buy than electric forklifts, but cost more per hour to run.

IC forklifts also stand up to certain types of misuse better than electric lifts – specifically, using a forklift to push or tow loads, instead of lifting and driving – and usually have better acceleration and top speeds. In large outdoor work sites, this can be an advantage.

Truck Frame – is the base of the machine to which the mast, axles, wheels, counterweight, overhead guard and power source are attached. The frame may have fuel and hydraulic fluid tanks constructed as part of the frame assembly.

Counterweight – is a heavy cast iron mass attached to the rear of the forklift truck frame. The purpose of the counterweight is to counterbalance the load being lifted. In an electric forklift the large lead-acid battery itself may serve as part of the counterweight.

Cab – is the area that contains a seat for the operator along with the control pedals, steering wheel, levers, switches and a dashboard containing operator readouts. The cab area may be open air or enclosed, but it is covered by the cage-like overhead guard assembly. The ‘Cab’ can also be equipped with a Cab Heater for cold climate countries.

Overhead Guard – is a metal roof supported by posts at each corner of the cab that helps protect the operator from any falling objects. On some forklifts, the overhead guard is an integrated part of the frame assembly.

Power Source – may consist of an internal combustion engine that can be powered by Liquid Propane Gas LPG, Petrol or Diesel fuel. Electric forklifts are powered by either a battery or fuel cells that provides power to the electric motors. The electric motors used on a forklift may be either DC or AC types.

Tilt Cylinders – are hydraulic cylinders that are mounted to the truck frame and the mast. The tilt cylinders pivot the mast to assist in engaging a load.

Mast – is the vertical assembly that does the work of raising and lowering the load. It is made up of interlocking rails that also provide lateral stability. The interlocking rails may either have rollers or bushings as guides. The mast is driven hydraulically, and operated by one or more hydraulic cylinders directly or using chains from the cylinder/s. It may be mounted to the front axle or the frame of the forklift.

Carriage – is the component to which the forks or other attachments mount. It is mounted into and moves up and down the mast rails by means of chains or by being directly attached to the hydraulic cylinder. Like the mast, the carriage may have either rollers or bushings to guide it in the interlocking mast rails.

Load Back Rest – is a rack-like extension that is either bolted or welded to the carriage in order to prevent the load from shifting backward when the carriage is lifted to full height.

Attachments – may consist of forks or tines that are the L-shaped members that engage the load. A variety of other types of material handling attachments are available. Some attachments include sideshifters, slipsheet attachments, carton clamps, multipurpose clamps, rotators, fork positioners, carpet poles, pole handlers, container handlers and roll clamps.

Attachments

Below is a list of common forklift attachments:

Sideshift – is a hydraulic attachment that allows the operator to move the forks and backrest laterally. This allows easier placement of a load without having to reposition the truck.

Rotator – To aid the handling of skids that may have become excessively tilted and other specialty material handling needs some forklifts are fitted with an attachment that allows the forks to be rotated. This type of attachment may also be used for dumping containers for quick unloading.

Fork Positioner – is a hydraulic attachment that moves the forks together or apart. This removes the need for the operator to manually adjust the tines for different sized loads.

Roll and Barrel Clamp Attachment – A mechanical or hydraulic attachment used to squeeze the item to be moved. It is used for handling barrels, kegs, or paper rolls. This type of attachment may also have a rotate function. The rotate function would help an operator to insert a vertically stored paper into the horizontal intake of a printing press for example.

Pole Attachments – In some locations, such as carpet warehouses, a long metal pole is used instead of forks to lift carpet rolls. Similar devices, though much larger, are used to pick up metal coils.

Carton and Multipurpose Clamp Attachments – are hydraulic attachments that allow the operator to open and close around a load, squeezing it to pick it up. Products like cartons, boxes and bales can be moved with this type attachment. With these attachments in use, the forklift truck is sometimes referred to as a clamp truck.

Slip Sheet Attachment (Push – Pull) – is a hydraulic attachment that reaches forward, clamps onto a slip sheet and draws the slip sheet onto wide and thin metal forks for transport. The attachment will push the slip sheet and load off the forks for placement.

Drum Handler Attachment – is a mechanical attachment that slides onto the forks. It usually has a spring loaded jaw that grips the top lip edge of a drum for transport. Another type grabs around the drum in a manner similar to the roll or barrel attachments.

Man Basket – a lift platform that slides onto the forks and is meant for hoisting workers. The man basket has railings to keep the person from falling and brackets for attaching a safety harness. Also, a stap or chain is used to attach the man basket to the carriage of the forklift.

Telescopic Forks – are hydraulic attachments that allow the operator to operate in warehouse design for “double-deep stacking”, which means that two pallet shelves are placed behind each other without any aisle between them.

Scales -Fork truck mounted scales enable operators to efficiently weigh the pallets they handle without interrupting their workflow by travelling to a platform scale. Scales are available that provide legal-for-trade weights for operations that involve billing by weight. They are easily retrofitted to the truck by hanging on the carriage in the same manner as forks hang on the truck. Any attachment on a forklift will reduce its nominal load rating, which is computed with a stock fork carriage and forks. The actual load rating may be significantly lower.

Tyres

There are three types of tyres to choose from: press-on band cushion tyres, which are made of solid rubber,  pneumatic tyres, which are inflated with compressed air and pneumatic profile solid tyres The latter are know as superlastic. For internal applications, cushion tyres are the best choice. For outdoor use over rough ground where more suspension is required pneumatic tyres maybe the best choice.

The third option, know as superlastic are more suited to the outdoor environments where there would be a high risk of punctures on regular pneumatic tyres. They combine the solid-rubber construction of cushion tyres with the rough terrain capabilities of pneumatic tyres, and typically are more expensive than the other two types.

Electric fork lifts are usually only available with superlastic or cushion tyres as they are predominantly used for internal works. For heavy-duty lifting outdoors on uneven terrain, a LPG or diesel lift truck with pneumatic tyres is the most common choice. What size of forklift do I need?

This is dependant upon the following factors:

• Weight to be lifted at centre of load
• Dimensions: length, width & height
• Lift height
• Any attachments to be fitted to truck
• It is recommended that you carry out a full site survey prior to specifying the capacity, taking into account door heights, mezzanines, ground surfaces (affects tyre types), aisle dimensions etc etc. Doing this will assist us in getting you the right truck for your needs.
  

What tyres do I need?

Solid rubber thin banded tyres are used on compact forklifts and electric mainly for internal use, but can be used outside as long as there is a solid surface to work on (tarmac/concrete). The advantage is they are about 30% smaller allowing a tighter turning circle. Pneumatic profile solid rubber tyres look like car tyres and are preferred for use where the ground surface is uneven, but not soft or boggy! Super elastic tyres are also puncture proof but are designed to give the feel of a proper pneumatic tyre for a softer ride.

Will you deliver the forklift to our site?

Yes we will deliver the truck to you.

Do you supply a warranty on the trucks?

Yes we do. The usual is 3 months on the truck and if electric, a year on the battery.

Do you take part exchange?

Yes we do

The most common form of forklift has a cantilevered construction that enables the load to be picked up, transported horizontally and vertically and delivered outside the wheelbase area. However if you need to operate your truck in a restricted area, such as a narrow aisle then a standard Counterbalance Forklift might not be the most appropriate type of truck. The average 4 wheel counterbalance forklift needs at least a 3.5m aisle to operate comfortably. For slightly narrower aisle widths a 3 wheel electric or Reach Truck may be more appropriate.

Side-loader

A Side-loader is generally used to pick-up and transport long loads such as sheets or planks of wood or metal pipwork. The loads are picked up at 90 degrees to the direction of travel. Multi-Way versions are available that enables all wheels to rotate by 90 degrees, so that the load can be easily transported in both directions.

Pallet Stacker

A Pallet Stacker is a pedestrian truck based upon a pallet truck but fitted with a mast in order to provide a cost-effective combination of stacker and pallet transporter.

Reach Truck

A Reach Truck has a load handler that can reach forward hydraulically for stacking and then be retracted for travelling. However unlike a Counterbalance Forklift these trucks are more suited for internal use, although they can be used outside.

Narrow Aisle truck

As the name suggests, they trucks that are specifically designed for use within the narrow aisles of high density warehousing situations. Depending upon the height of the lift, these trucks are available with either a man-up or man-down operating facility.

A common mistake is to buy a forklift with a 3 phase charger only to later discover there is not a 3 phase outlet in your building.

Electric forklifts are not very good for climbing ramps and don’t like getting rained on.

Electric forklifts generally have fewer breakdowns than internal combustion trucks and therefore cost about 25% less to operate and maintain but are more complicated and usually require a specially trained technician.

Gas – Also known as LPG (Liquid Propane Gas) is used with an internal combustion engine but has low emissions that enable it to be used both indoors and out. On average you can expect to get 8-12 hours running time from a full tank.

Diesel - Forklifts with diesel internal combustion engines are usually large trucks for outdoor use. Diesel engines, when well maintained, operate very efficiently with minimal problems.

Electric - Also known as battery trucks, are quiet have virtually no emissions and ideally suited to indoor use. On a new battery you can expect to get around 8 hours running time from a full charge. A big advantage of electric power is that your fuel is paid for upfront!

Lift Capacity

What is the heaviest load that you are likely to need to handle. A 3000kg 5m triple mast truck does not mean that you can take a 3000kg load and put it up 5m. Lift load greatly diminishes as the height of the load increases.

Lift Height

Most forklifts are simply used to unload trucks, but some businesses use pallet racking and need to be able to lift the goods onto the shelves.
A standard mast has an upright that lifts about 3m, whereas warehouse trucks can reach over 10m.

Height Restrictions

If you are operating in an environment with low doorways or need to unload containers then these restrictions need to be taken into consideration when determining the type of mast. Freelift masts allow the forks to raise up to 2m without raising the height of the mast itself.

Finance Lease

This is an agreement for the rental of goods where title always remains with the leasing company. Rentals, consisting of capital and interest, are repaid over the agreed period which will be less than the useful working life of the asset. Typically this period will be two to five years. At the end of the hire period the goods can either be retained for an extended secondary period or alternatively disposed of.
